In chemical production, magnesium sulfate is used as a raw material for the production of magnesium stearate, magnesium hydrogen phosphate, magnesium oxide, and other magnesium salts (such as magnesium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide), potassium sulfate, sodium sulfate and other sulfates. In the chemical analysis of chemical production, magnesium sulfate can be used as a chemical reagent.

1. Metathesis reaction between magnesium sulfate and alkali solution to generate magnesium hydroxide precipitation:

MgSO4+2NaOH=Mg(OH)2↓+Na2SO4

MgSO4+2NH3•H2O=Mg(OH)2↓+(NH4)2SO4

2. Magnesium sulfate can be used to prepare other magnesium salts, such as magnesium trisilicate by reacting with fuchsia alkali, and basic magnesium carbonate by reacting with ammonium bicarbonate.:

MgSO4+2Na2O•3SiO•5H2O=2MgO•3SiO2•5H2O↓+2Na2SO4

5MgSO4+10NH4HCO3=4MgCO3•Mg(OH)2•4H2O↓+6CO2↑+5(NH4)2SO4

3. Magnesium sulfate is used to prepare other sulfates. For example, potassium sulfate can be prepared by reacting with potassium chloride, and barium sulfate can be prepared by reacting with barium chloride.:

MgSO4+2KCl=K2SO4+MgCl2

MgSO4+BaCl2=BaSO4↓+MgCl2

In the chemical analysis of the reagent industry, the high-quality magnesium sulfate in northern Sichuan has reached the reagent grade standard, which can be used as a benchmark for standard solutions such as EDTA and BaCl2, and can be configured as a standard solution for titration of Ba2+ and PO43+.

In addition, magnesium sulfate is used in the production of other fine chemicals to produce decontamination agents, binders, hair fixing agents, thread fragrance additives, etc.
